What is Smudging
Smudging is the practice of burning sacred herbs/resins for bringing cleansing, purification and clarity to a sacred space periodically and before performing spells, rituals, divination and any spiritual practice/light work. The sacred smoke cleanses any dense or negative energies to purify the energy in the energy to be used for positive and higher intentions.
The ceremony of using an abalone shell and feather is to represent all four of the earth’s elements: the shell represents water, the smoke represents air, the herbs or resins represent earth and once they’re lit they represent fire. Feathers are used to lift the stagnant energy during a smudging ceremony. Feathers transform the art of space clearing by guiding the smoke and energy into the wind to be cleansed. In the traditions of Native Americans, feathers are considered sacred gifts from the sky, sea and the trees.
In practical terms, the shell is used to hold the burning sage stick and the feather used to fan the sacred smoke around the space/object/person. You can use the shell to both catch any ash and also to put the burning stick out when finished.
